No. 22 “Song Without Words”

Did you know that Mendelssohn composed three works of significant length and structure for the cello? Most probably know of his two magnificent Cello Sonatas. Many likely also are aware of the stunning set of “Concert Variations”. But did you know that one “Song Without Words” was expressly written for the Cello? The eminently beautiful Op. 109 in D major is just that number.

This not so little piece shows the brilliance of Mendelssohn’s compositional prowess. His accompaniment is stunning in its own right.
